Project Description

B.Mus. (Humber College)

Trevor is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and composer who performs and teaches in Toronto. Originally from Vancouver, he has been active in the Canadian music scene for ten years.

Trevor completed his Bachelor of Music with honours from Humber College, where he had the chance to study with renowned guitarists Ted Quinlan, Geoff Young, David Occhipinti, and Kim Ratcliffe. During his time at Humber, Trevor was the recipient of the Greg Wells Music Scholarship for music production, the Yamaha Music Scholarship for musicianship, as well as the Peter Harris Memorial Award for guitar.

Trevor’s experience with studio recordings, as well as performing live in a variety of styles has informed the development of his teaching approach, which is relaxed, flexible, fun, and focused. Learning songs and cultivating an organic approach to the instrument are given priority in lessons. He specializes in Jazz, Pop, Rock, Folk, Blues, and Country, but is open to teaching any style of music. Trevor seeks to encourage the interest of each student by focusing on listening skills, as well as bridging the gap between musical ear and musical performance.

Homework To Be Completed For March 23

Jack

What to practice: Guitar tuning and Demons/Imagine Dragons

How to practice it most effectively: Try matching the sound of your guitar to the sound of another guitar, or piano keyboard. Go string by string, adjusting the pitch up and down, let your ears guide you. Start checking out your song as well if you get a chance.

How parents can support practice: If you get the chance to play guitar with Jack, trying getting tuned up by ear could be a fun exercise, he has his song as well to start checking out. Have fun!

Jett

Recommended minutes to practice: 15 min/day

What to practice: Arms Around You

How to practice it most effectively: See if you can get access to a “metronome” for practice this week. (This is a tool for music practice that will be helpful moving forward, you can either purchase a handheld device from a music store such as Long & Mcquade, or they are available as “apps” or on the web.

How parents can support practice: If you can help Jett get access to a “metronome” this week, that would be great. It’s a useful tool for practicing musical timing that he’ll be able to practice with and get lots of use out of. I’ll check in on this next week and let me know if you have any questions, thank you!

Hythem

Recommended minutes to practice: 10 min / 4 times a week

What to practice: Drag Me Down

How to practice it most effectively: Go through the notes in the first cell, see if you can play just once per note, without repeating any or starting over – then try this excercise for the other cells, we’ll look at putting them together next week!

How parents can support practice: Encourage Hythem to pick up the guitar for a few minutes each day, and his practice will continue to pay off. Thanks!

Griffin

Recommended minutes to practice: 15 min/day

What to practice: Triads in Major and Minor

How to practice it most effectively: Use the top 3 strings (E, B, and G) Go through 3 note chords in major and minor, starting with C and going through the circle of fourths (C, F, Bb, Ab, you can stop at Ab).

How parents can support practice: Encourage Griffin to continue spending a bit of time each day on the instrument, his practice will continue to pay off!

Have a good week everyone!
