Hi everyone,

With the transition to ZOOM video lessons, I am no longer able to write down notes and musical material in the students’ books/binders. Instead, I have created PDF documents for each of you and dropped them into a Google Drive folder. The link to your documents is listed in the What to practice heading under your name below. You should be able to access the documents simply by clicking on the link. Here are your practice assignments for this week:

Will

Recommended minutes to practice: 20-30 minutes per day

What to practice: Review the end of page 2 of “Beggin’” and start practicing page 3.

How to practice it most effectively: The end of page 2 just needs a bit more work so you can get through it consistently without stopping and starting. Also, try to push the speed up to the same speed that you are playing the earlier material. With page 3, start by figuring out the rhythms, then practice it a few bars at a time very slowly. As it starts to feel more comfortable, practice a few more bars at a time and gradually speed it up.

Elliot

Recommended minutes to practice: 10-15 minutes per day

What to practice: Practice page 2 of “Can’t Stop”: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/10YGpSqgr9Z2SExyhXz7k1evG3C0t2VEc?usp=sharing

How to practice it most effectively: It is important that you set aside some time each week to practice for your lessons. Practicing is the only way to learn an instrument effectively. Even if it’s only 10-15 minutes a few times per week, it is important that you do it consistently.

Nate O.

Recommended minutes to practice: 15-20 minutes per day

What to practice: Practice page 3 of “Never Lost” by Cece Winans: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1lsS6FvGAobS96Y5mFUDE_7L1HGfAK0_s?usp=sharing

How to practice it most effectively: Most of the beats and rhythms on this page are similar to what you have played in the earlier choruses. The only major difference is in the last three lines where you have the triplet rhythms with the middle note of each triplet removed. Listen to the ending of the song a few times to remind yourself of how this part goes. Take it slow and be sure to count in your head as you play.

Noah

Recommended minutes to practice: 10-15 minutes per day

What to practice: Practice the two-measure beats from Lesson 5 together with improvised drum fills and practice the main beat at the top of the “Chameleon” page: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Dga1ZBRWaN_Ka4O1G009w-74c4VaZCj7?usp=sharing

How to practice it most effectively: When improvising drum fills, try to think of as many different ways as you can to move rhythms around the drums. Try out different ideas and see what you like. Avoid playing the same rhythms over and over again. With the beat from Chameleon, remember that the most important part is the accents on the hi-hat.

Koel

Recommended minutes to practice: 10-15 minutes per day

What to practice: Practice the beats and fills from “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1SCS8WVjfR1OZVlYmt8a1r2LTxo2NJOpN?usp=sharing

How to practice it most effectively: This section combines the verse beat from the beginning of the song with a few different fills that move around the drum kit. Be sure to identify on which part of the beat each of the fills starts (either on “2” or on “3”). Practice them individually at first, then try to put them together as they feel more comfortable.

Sylvie

Recommended minutes to practice: 15-20 minutes per day

What to practice: Practice playing the whole song from beginning to end: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1KGeo9VGh3JOWzwpGhEe1DbXMRuQiG7lL?usp=sharing

How to practice it most effectively: As you work through the song this week, take note of which sections are hardest to play. If you feel like you need to slow down in a particular section, or if you keep needing to stop in the same places, identify those spots and practice them by themselves several times in a row. Next week we will try to run through the whole song, but we will also address any spots that still need work.
