Hi everyone,

Here are your practice assignments for this week:

Will

Recommended minutes to practice: 15-20 minutes per day

What to practice: The beats that you worked on with David and the beginning of “Arabella” by the Arctic Monkeys.

How to practice it most effectively: Take your time with the intro to “Arabella.” It’s a slow and groovy beat, so it’s important not to rush it. Focus on keeping the hi-hat at a steady speed and fit the snare drum and bass drum notes around it. The hi-hat should be your time keeper.

Emily

Recommended minutes to practice: 20-30 minutes per day

What to practice: The shuffle beats and fills that I wrote down in your book.

How to practice it most effectively: Remember that the shuffle it a triplet-based drum beat, so it’s important to feel the subdivisions in 3. First practice just playing the hi-hat rhythm at a few different speeds until it really feels steady, then try working in the bass and snare, and then finally the fills. Try to come up with your own fill ideas that a triplet-based.

Nate O.

Recommended minutes to practice: 15-20 minutes per day

What to practice: The three new funk beats that we worked on this week.

How to practice it most effectively: Practice each of the beats very slowly. It may be helpful to separate the bass and snare from the hi-hat at first. Practice playing the rhythm of the bass and snare while you count it in your head. Then stop playing and start again with just the hi-hat. Focus on keeping it really steady; the hi-hat is your time keeper. Once it feels really steady then try to add in the rhythm on the bass and snare. Don’t try to go too fast and remember to count!
