What to practice: Practice #7-12 on the “Lessons 6” page and begin working on the beginning of “Black Dog” by Led Zeppelin.

How to practice it most effectively: With the half-measure patterns in Lesson 6, focus on keeping a steady pulse on the hi-hat while you play the bass/snare rhythm. Avoid adding extra notes on the hi-hat or changing the pulse in any way. Aim to play each pattern at least four times in a row without stopping before moving on to the next one. For “Black Dog,” listen to the song and see if you can play along with the opening section.

How to practice it most effectively: With the half-measure patterns in Lesson 5, focus on keeping a steady pulse on the hi-hat while you play the bass/snare rhythm. Avoid adding extra notes on the hi-hat or changing the pulse in any way. Aim to play each pattern at least four times in a row without stopping before moving on to the next one. For the flam/bass pattern, play this sequence four times in a row: flam (on the snare), bass, hi-hat, bass. Try it slowly first, then gradually speed it up. See how fast you can go without making a mistake.

What to practice: Practice #13-16 from your Stick Control book and the whole first page of Arabella

How to practice it most effectively: Keep working on the stick control exercises the same way that you have been. Remember to try them at different speeds. Try to push yourself to go faster than you think you can. With Arabella, focus on the fills from the end of the first page. Remember that when you have six notes with a “6” written above them, it means that those six notes have to fit within the space of two eighth notes (or two hi-hat pulses). Practice playing this slowly and then gradually speed it up.

What to practice: Practice #13-16 from Lesson 5 and work on the Intro, Verse, and Chorus from “Say It Ain’t So.”

How to practice it most effectively: With the beats in Lesson 5, focus on keeping a steady pulse on the hi-hat while you play the bass/snare rhythm. Avoid adding extra notes on the hi-hat or changing the pulse in any way. Aim to play each pattern at least four times in a row without stopping before moving on to the next one. For “Say It Ain’t So,” practice playing all the way through the Intro and Verse, and then all the way through the Chorus. If this feels comfortable, then try playing all of it together.

What to practice: Practice playing the rhythms from the first page in your binder as drum fills with a drum beat.

How to practice it most effectively: First practice playing the rhythms around the drums in different ways. Be creative and try to come up with different ways to play each rhythm around the drums. After that, practice playing each rhythm as a fill together with a drum beat: play the beat once followed by the fill once, then play the beat three times followed by the fill once. Finally, add in the crash at the beginning of the beat after each fill.
