Hi everyone,

Here are your assignments for this week:

Will

Recommended minutes to practice: 20-30 minutes per day

What to practice: Continue to review Tom Sawyer by playing together with the recording and practice the accent patterns available here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/17pjkCZ1jfMdjwRqFBMaPIG_hKMb3gQGz?usp=share_link

How to practice it most effectively: Practice playing each accent pattern first on the snare drum and then with the accents on the toms. Focus on keeping the rhythm really steady and also keeping all the non-accented notes nice and soft. Play each pattern at different speeds from very slow to as fast as you can while still maintaining the steadiness of the rhythm and the softness of the non-accented notes.

Jared

Recommended minutes to practice: 15-20 minutes per day

What to practice: Keep working on the 12/8 beats and practice them together with the drum fills on this sheet: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1JX6UYuVpfhBjfawAizC8uiaZhTAKinrs?usp=share_link

How to practice it most effectively: The most important thing is to make sure all the eighth notes played by your right hand are the same length. The rhythm of your right hand when playing the beat should not have any gaps or pauses. You can count it “1 & a 2 & a 3 & a 4 & a…”. Play each beat slowly to make sure you have all the bass drum and snare drum notes in the right places. Then practice the first three fills listed at the bottom of the page together with the beats (don’t worry about #4 and #5).

Koel

Recommended minutes to practice: 15-20 minutes per day

What to practice: Practice the main beat from “When I Come Around” on this sheet: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1SCS8WVjfR1OZVlYmt8a1r2LTxo2NJOpN?usp=share_link

How to practice it most effectively: Focus on the rhythm of the bass drum and snare drum. Be sure that the second and fourth snare drum notes in the first bar come in between the hi-hat notes. Also watch out for the crash in the second bar. It should be played together with the bass drum and right after the snare drum.

Caroline

Recommended minutes to practice: 10-15 minutes per day

What to practice: Review the shuffle beats and practice the new syncopation exercises that I gave you this week.

How to practice it most effectively: With the shuffle beats, practice playing them together with the fills that we worked on in your lesson (listed on the sheet). Make sure that you are not slowing down or speeding up between the beat and the fill. The feel of the shuffle beat should continue throughout the fill. With the syncopation exercises, practice them slowly and focus on getting the bass drum to play in between the hi-hat notes.
