Cornerstone Homework March 6-14: Grades 7-12

Grades 7-12

What we did this week:

We reviewed the Air with the bowing patterns. We learned the two octave C minor harmonic scale two octaves and the C minor arpeggio. We worked on shifting and third position.

What did we listen to or watch, that you can watch at home?

We sang through the two scales minor melodic and minor harmonic. We worked on shifting and intonation as a result we sang through intervals as well.

What are we doing next week?

Next week is review week where we will be going over all of the material for test week. We will be running through this material with the piano.

How much time should your student be practicing each day?

A solid 45 minute or 60 minute session focusing on all material learned so far is strongly encouraged.

How can you help your child?

We recommend that instruments go home on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the next 2 weeks, and that parents increase focus at this point.  If you have not been bringing your instrument home on weekends, this is your home-stretch warning for improving your playing.

Bach Videos!

Hi Grade 7-12s!

As promised, here are some Bach Videos that I really like.

Toccata and Fugue in D minor

First, there’s the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor:

The ‘Little’ Fugue in G minor

Then, there’s the very famous Little Fugue in G minor.  This version is excellent, because it gives you a very strong view of how voicing works in fugues.  Remember, Bach was also a huge composer of choral music, so having different ‘voices’ was a core of his musical compositions.

Passacaglia in C minor

One of the amazing things about Bach’s music is how well it translates to other instruments.  Here is one of my favourite examples, the Passacaglia in C minor, played by 8-part Trombone Ensemble.

The Passacaglia is great, and is a form of theme-and-variation which is common to music, regardless of style.

Popcorn

Since we’re talking about theme-and-variation, here is a more modern example of how one tune can be changed, but stay the same.

Enjoy!

Barnaby.
