Hi everyone,

With the transition to ZOOM video lessons, I am no longer able to write down notes and musical material in the students’ books/binders. Instead, I have created PDF documents for each of you and dropped them into a Google Drive folder. The link to your documents is listed in the What to practice heading under your name below. You should be able to access the documents simply by clicking on the link. Here are your practice assignments for this week:

Damian

Recommended minutes to practice: 5-10 minutes per day

What to practice: Spend some time this week playing rhythms that use the cymbal, the bass, and the other drums.

How to practice it most effectively: This past Saturday we worked on keeping a steady beat (1…2…3…4…) on the cymbal while playing different parts of the beat on the bass and on the other drums. When you sit down at the drums this week, count out loud while you play the cymbal and then try these four exercises: 1) play beat 1 on the bass, 2) play beat 1 and 3 on the bass, 3) play beat 4 on the drum, 4) play beat 2 and 4 on the drum.

Koel

Recommended minutes to practice: 10-15 minutes per day

What to practice: Practice playing the accent patterns around the drums: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1SCS8WVjfR1OZVlYmt8a1r2LTxo2NJOpN?usp=sharing

How to practice it most effectively: There are lots of things you can do with these exercises. One of them is to move the accents on to the toms while keeping the non-accented notes on the snare drum. The right hand can effectively move to any of the toms while the left hand can reach at least the high tom. Make sure when you’re practicing this way that you still keep the non-accented notes very soft on the snare drum. Try to come up with your own ways of moving the accents around on the drums.

Jonathan

Recommended minutes to practice: 20-30 minutes per day

What to practice: Keep practicing the ghost note beats (#19-24) as well as the fills from “Chameleon” by Herbie Hancock: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1GxopIaGPN0UhwG3zk4gQWTnEaDDL7TWP?usp=sharing

How to practice it most effectively: With the fills from Chameleon, practice playing them in different combinations with the beat. Have a listen to the song as well to hear how they all fit together with the other instruments. Take note of the long fill in the song as we will work on that one next week.

Andraz

Recommended minutes to practice: 10-15 minutes per day

What to practice: Review the sixteenth note rhythms from this past week and the coordination exercises from two weeks ago: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/19R3GmSbTvlCrqfF_BOrD3z8nzgM3vZO9?usp=sharing

How to practice it most effectively: Great work in your first two lessons, Andraz! We were able to cover a lot of ground to start developing the basic skills in playing the drums. Try to review all the exercises that I have written down for you, especially the sixteenth notes and coordination exercises) a few times this week. Remember to count the rhythms while you play them. This will help with accuracy and consistency.
