Here are your homework assignments for this week:
Practice the coordination exercises that we worked on this week. Keep a steady beat on the hi-hat and count out loud “1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 etc.” Play the bass drum on the appropriate beats and make sure you play each exercises several times in a row before moving on. Once you have played all 10 exercises, then play the beat at the bottom of the page. Make sure you are still counting out loud!
Take a look at the three new ghost note beats that are written in your book. Practice them slowly first and focus on the movement of your left hand. Remember that the ghost notes are controlled by the wrist, while the main notes use the whole arm. As the beats begin to feel more comfortable, try speeding them up.
Practice the two beats from Black Dog that we worked on this week. Practice slowly and focus on being consistent – doing the same thing every time. Don’t rush through the beats, but pay attention to each note that you play to make sure it fits. Also, work on the transition between the fill and the new beat.
Keep working on the coordination exercises. Count out loud and focus on playing each one the same every time. Start slow and play each exercises several times in a row. Then try it again but a little bit faster. Don’t go faster than you are able to play accurately.
