Hello, it was great meeting everyone and love hearing you play some music. I’m looking forward to a great year.

Katarina

Recommended minutes to practice: 5 minutes a day

What to practice: I just want you to play a C chord for me while holding the ukulele upright and have your thumb on the back of the neck.

How to practice it most effectively: Picking up the instrument once a day and strumming slowly for 5 minutes would be great, ask your mom to help you stay focused.

How Parents Can Help: Just encourage her to pick up the instrument once a day for 5 minutes and make sure she is holding it in the right position instead of letting it slip into her lap.

Recommended minutes to practice: 15 minutes a day

What to practice:  Next week I want to hear the Bach piece again as well as the three variations on the D chord, as well as hear you finger pick the chord.

How to practice it most effectively: Practice the chord variations slowly and make sure every note is ringing out, as well as play the Bach piece slowly and with a metronome if you can.

Recommended minutes to practice: 15 minutes a day

What to practice: Next week I want to hear the first riff of sunshine of your love since we memorized it in lesson. Try to keep in memorized rather than looking at the tab. Also review your chords because I’ll ask to hear those.

How to practice it most effectively: Play sunshine of your love slowly and if you can get it up to speed play along with the recording. The source material is always the key to sounding better, plus I think you’ll enjoy the song.

Simon

Recommended minutes to practice: 30 minutes a day

What to practice: Try and hear the chords to House Of The Rising Sun, no worries if you don’t get the whole thing as long as you try and use your ears. Avoid at all costs looking up the tab. Don’t forget to start a small practice journal of how much you’re practicing and what you’re practicing. Even if you just noodle for 20 minutes write it down, it’s a good habit to form. Also think about what goals you have for the next year.

How to practice it most effectively: To hear a song, it’s great to listen to it a bunch, then try and figure out without the song, just based on what your ears remember. Then go back and play along with the recording.
