Hi everyone,

Next week you will be having a substitute drum teacher. His name is Sam. He teaches at ABC on Monday evenings. I will fill him in on what each of you has been working on.

Here are your practice assignments for this week:

Aidan

This week, practice playing “Can’t Stop” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers along with a recording of the song. Focus on the transitions between the verse and chorus and also on the fill at the end of the bridge. Remember to add the open hi-hat in the verse at the end of every four bars. See if you can make it from the beginning of the song to the end without stopping.

Sabrina

Keep working on your rudiments, especially the flam, flam accent, drag, and drag tap. Practice everything slowly and focus on making each movement correct. If possible, practice in front of a mirror so that you can see the motion of your arms and the heights of your sticks. This will help in making sure that you do the same rudiments the same each time. Also, try to get together the last 3 lines of your snare solo. Next time we work on snare I would like to try a run through of the whole piece.

Sam

Practice your rudiments, particularly the flam and flam accent. Be very careful to play the right sticking with the flam accent. Pay attention to the rights and lefts and make sure you are doing it the same each time. Only after you’re sure that you have the sticking correct should you try to speed it up.

Josh

Great work on the drum beats and fills this week! Keep working on the three beats that are written down in your book. Try playing fills with each one. Be creative and experiment with different rhythms and sounds in the fills. However, be sure to always keep time by counting in your head and don’t let the fill throw you off.
