Louis “Pino” Pino is from Dix Hills, NY and is a recent graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, having studied percussion with Michael Rosen and computer music with Aurie Hsu and Joo Won Park, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in percussion performance at the University of Toronto with Aiyun Huang. Pino began his musical career playing drum set and hand drums with several local ensembles, and moved on to study at the Juilliard Pre-College, where he received the Commencement Award upon graduation. When arriving at Oberlin, Pino had the opportunity to collaborate with many students at the conservatory and has come to premiere over 50 new chamber and solo works written by himself and his peers.
In addition to performing, Pino teaches a small studio of students and is an active composer of electroacoustic music. He often writes music for instruments and interactive electronics, and collaborates in creating interdisciplinary works with dancers and film artists. SPECIAL FIELD TRIP! (Director’s Note)
Hello Everybody!
We have a rare and special opportunity to go see Jonny Smith – one of our percussion teachers – perform a solo piece (called a concerto) with the University of Toronto Wind Ensemble on Thursday, October 10th. Jonny is in the final stages of doing his doctorate in percussion, the highest qualification available.
We want to celebrate both the opportunity, and Jonny’s effort.
We are, therefore, inviting all drum/percussion students to join us for a free pizza dinner and this concert as guests of ABC Academy, Jonny, and the University.
We’ll ask you to drop off your student at ABC (12 Conway Ave.) at 4:45pm on Thursday, October 10th. They will need bus fare (if they are of age for that), and appropriate attire for the weather that day. We will take them down to the St. George campus area for a pizza dinner, the you can pick them up at an estimated time of 9:15-9:30pm at St. George Subway Station – Baldwin St. entrance.
YOU MUST RSVP BY: Calling the office by no later than Friday, October 4th to confirm your attendance. 416-651-7529
We hope you’ll let your student(s) join us for this really exciting opportunity to hear one of our amazing team in action!

Sept 25-30 Practice
Hi everyone! Thanks for the great playing today! Here’s what I’d like you to work on for next time.
Ella- Here is the chart for Black Parade (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1LPsB7jnBkKtvJDJ14Q0pDhF1Y7hzBjP3). It looks different, but you’ll be able to find where the other one ends when you listen to the song. Try to learn up to page 3 where the triplet stuff comes in. Don’t worry about getting it up to tempo yet.
Eric- This week, finish up Mr. Blue Sky and practice Swing Sheet B. See how fast you can get it, especially the first two of them. Of course, start slow and build throughout the week.
Jonah- Think about what music you want to learn on the xylophone and practice your C scale!
Noah- Write in the counting for the last rhythm in your book and practice playing it. Also, look at Lesson 1 beats 1-15. Don’t worry about trying to get to them all every day, just focus on a few each day and work them out slowly like we did in the lesson.
Sylvie- Work on all Disco Beats and try to reach the goal tempo of 105 for 1-7 and 70 for the rest. In addition, practice playing along to the opening rhythm of One Room Disco which we will continue on with next week.
Koel- Practice Lesson 1 and try to bring it up to 80 bpm on the metronome over the course of the week. Don’t worry about trying to get to them all every day, just focus on a few each day and work them out slowly like we did in the lesson.
See you all next week, have fun playing!

STICK CONTROL
George Lawrence Stone’s Stick Control is the bible of drumming. In 1993, Modern Drummer magazine named the book one of the top 25 books of all-time. In the words of the author, it is the ideal book for improving: control, speed, flexibility, touch, rhythm, lightness, delicacy, power, endurance, preciseness of execution and muscular coordination, with extra attention given to the development of the weak hand.
4-Way Coordination
Rockin' Bass Drum, Bk 1
Written in two volumes, these books include 2- and 4- bar rock and jazz-rock beats designed for the modern drummer. Both books are designed to develop the drummer’s skill in coordinating their hands and feet. The books also offer the drummer a repertoire of exciting rhythmic patterns.
