Take a look at the rhythms and beats that we worked on in your lesson. Practice counting each rhythm out loud before you play it. Also, try playing each rhythm or beat at least five times in a row without stopping. This will help to develop more consistency in your playing.

Keep working on the accent patterns we looked at this week. Practice each one slowly and pay close attention to the height of your sticks while you play. Remember to raise the stick high above the drum before each accent, but then keep the sticks low for all the non-accented notes.

Practice the 16th-note open hi hat beats that we’ve been working on. For the ones that feel comfortable, see if you can push the tempo a little bit. For the harder ones, keep them slow and focus on the coordination of your left foot. Also, come up with at least one beat of your own and write it down in your book.
