Happy New Year, everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and got much needed rest. Very happy to be back with all of you again.

What we worked on: We dug into “White Christmas” today.

Recommended minutes to practice: 15 mins a day

What to practice: Vowels in White Christmas.

How to practice most effectively: We’ve been working on breath and vowels for a while now, so this is your chance to apply what you’ve learned. Over the next few days, sit down with the song and go through it, thinking about where to drop your jaw, what vowels need to be elongated to improve your sound. Make sure you mark this in your sheet music.

How parents can support practice: Happy to hear he is singing occasionally around you all. Keep it up!

What we worked on: Beginning “Your Power”

Recommended minutes to practice: 15 – 20 mins a day

What to practice: Sirens to strengthen your upper register & exploring the complexities of the chorus.

How to practice most effectively: In our search for the best way to create and find space for resonating, I want you to ensure you’re incorporating siren runs into your warm-ups every day. This will help to warm up your vocal chords for those higher notes and will naturally help you create more space for those notes. Once you’ve done that and feel pretty good, give the song a go, especially the chorus. Remember – we always want to prep about 2 bars ahead when we sing, so pay attention to what’s coming next as you sing.

What we worked on: Breaking down “Perfect”

Recommended minutes to practice: 15 mins a day.

What to practice: Rhythm and timing of the song.

How to practice most effectively: We talked about the sort of polyrhythms in this song, where it’s written in phrases of 3, but sung in counts of 4. So I want you to practice this week, counting as you go. You can tap your foot, snap along or just count in your head. Pay attention to the bass line of the music, and Beats 1 and 3 to keep you grounded in that rhythm. Remember – it’s slower than you think!
