Learning music builds skills that transfer across everything else. The right teacher makes the difference between quitting in month two and playing for life.
RCM Exam Prep at ABC Academy — Every Instrument, Every Grade
If you or your child wants to work toward Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) certification, we can help. Our private-lesson teachers guide students from Preliminary through Grade 10 on piano, guitar, voice, violin, and more. You set the pace — RCM is one path we support, not the only goal we offer.
What the RCM Syllabus Covers
The RCM practical syllabus runs from Preliminary (no prior experience needed) up to Grade 10. Each level sets out specific repertoire lists, technical requirements, and ear-training exercises. Students are assessed by an independent examiner, not their own teacher, so the result is an objective benchmark.
Piano has the longest history in the RCM program, but the syllabus now covers classical guitar, acoustic guitar, voice, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, and several other instruments. If you play it, there is likely an RCM stream for it.
Theory Co-Requisites
Starting at Grade 5, the RCM requires a passing theory result before it will award a practical certificate. The theory grades that matter are:
- Grade 5 practical — requires RCM Theory Grade 1
- Grade 6 practical — requires RCM Theory Grade 2
- Grade 7 and 8 practical — requires RCM Theory Grade 3
- Grade 9 and 10 practical — requires RCM Theory Grades 4 and 5 (Harmony and History)
We recommend starting theory alongside lessons no later than the transition from Grade 4 to Grade 5 repertoire. Many students find theory easier when learned gradually rather than crammed before an exam session. Ask your teacher how to weave theory practice into your weekly routine.
Exam Registration and Timeline
The RCM runs exam sessions twice a year — typically in January–February (Winter session) and May–June (Spring session). A small number of examiners are available in September as well. Registration deadlines fall roughly three months before the session opens, so planning ahead matters.
Your teacher will let you know when repertoire is exam-ready. A general guide:
- Preliminary through Grade 2: six months to one year of focused work
- Grade 3 through Grade 5: one to two years per grade, depending on practice time
- Grade 6 through Grade 8: one to three years per grade
- Grade 9 and Grade 10: two to four years each, including theory co-requisites
Students who practice four to five days a week consistently move through levels faster than the high end of those ranges. Shorter or less consistent practice extends the timeline.
Piano RCM Prep — What to Expect
Piano is the instrument most closely associated with RCM history in Canada. Our lessons at our Lawrence Park studio and our Conway studio follow the current RCM Piano Syllabus editions. Students work from the official RCM repertoire books and, at higher grades, select pieces from approved lists to build a program that suits their musical interests.
For students who do not yet own an acoustic piano, a weighted-key keyboard — such as a Yamaha P-45 — is acceptable at the early grades. By Grade 5 and above, regular access to an acoustic or high-end digital piano with fully weighted, touch-sensitive keys becomes important for developing the dynamics and touch control examiners expect.
Private lessons begin at age 5. Children under 5 are not yet ready for the structure of private lessons; our Music Together program is designed for that earlier stage.
Guitar, Voice, and Other Instruments
Guitar students can pursue the RCM Classical Guitar stream or the new Contemporary Musicianship stream, depending on their repertoire goals. Voice students work on diction, breath support, and a mix of art song, musical theatre, and contemporary repertoire at each grade level.
For violin, cello, flute, and other orchestral instruments, the RCM practical syllabus integrates scales, studies, and curated repertoire at every grade. Our private-lesson teachers hold university music degrees or the equivalent and are familiar with the current RCM requirements for their instruments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my child start RCM right away, or do they need to wait?
Most students spend at least one year building foundational technique before sitting a Preliminary exam. The Preliminary level itself is accessible for beginners, but trying to rush an exam in the first few months rarely produces a good experience. Your teacher will tell you when the timing is right.
What happens if we miss lessons during exam prep?
We offer up to 2 guaranteed make-up lessons per teaching year for student absences; additional make-ups are provided for teacher absences and weather closures. Group lessons do not include make-ups. Full details are at our policies page.
Do you charge more for RCM-focused lessons?
No — RCM prep is part of how we structure private lessons when that is the student’s goal. Lesson rates are the same regardless of whether a student is preparing for an exam or following a non-exam path. See current rates on our tuition page.
