What happens in a Music Together class

A typical 45-minute session moves through a familiar arc: a hello song, call-and-response chants, free-movement pieces, a quiet lullaby section on the floor, and a farewell song. The same songs repeat across the full 10-week season. A six-month-old hears a melody with no apparent reaction. By week four, the same child kicks their legs on the opening phrase. By week eight, they may vocalize a fragment before the teacher reaches it. That sequence, hearing then anticipating then filling in, is how musical intuition forms. Drop-ins interrupt the accumulation, which is why Music Together runs as a season.

Caregivers are not audience members. An engaged caregiver singing at full voice, even an imperfect one, is fuel to the fire. A caregiver sitting back on their phone is water on it. Singing quality does not matter. Presence does.

Getting here from Oakwood Village

Oakwood Village centres on the intersection of St. Clair Ave W and Oakwood Ave. The Conway Ave studio sits roughly 10 minutes west along St. Clair, near Wychwood Ave. By car, take St. Clair Ave W west from Oakwood Ave through the rail underpass and continue past Dufferin Street; Conway Ave is a few blocks further, south off St. Clair. The drive takes eight to ten minutes in regular traffic.

By transit, board the 512 St. Clair streetcar at Oakwood Ave and ride westbound to Wychwood Ave, then walk south one short block to Conway Ave, about 12 minutes door to door. Oakwood Station on the Eglinton Crosstown connects families coming from further east without a transfer downtown.

Wychwood Barns, the arts and community hub on Wychwood Ave, is two blocks north of the studio. Christie Pits and Dufferin Grove Park are both within a short walk or drive. Street parking on Conway Ave and surrounding residential streets is generally available on weekday mornings and evenings.

What your child gets at each age

A six-month-old absorbs sound and movement without visible response; pitch and rhythm patterns are forming internally. A two-year-old begins echoing melodic fragments and responds physically to familiar songs before the phrase resolves. A four-year-old may sing independently, keep a rough beat on a drum, and anticipate the class routine by name. A five-year-old nearing the end of the Music Together age range often shows the focus and fine motor readiness to move into private lessons.

After Music Together, the natural next stage is private lessons in piano, voice, guitar, or another instrument, typically starting around age five. Rhythm Kids, a Music Together program bridging ages four to seven, is also available at select locations.

We have two Toronto locations and offer private lessons in piano, guitar, singing, and other instruments when children are ready, with RCM exam prep alongside recreational learners. An independent teacher cannot offer the same backup or continuity.
A drop-in resets the musical accumulation children need. Toddlers build intuition by hearing the same songs eight to ten times across a season, eventually anticipating and filling in phrases. A drop-in breaks that sequence before it can take hold. Our 10-week seasons let the repetition do its work. We offer a free demo class so you can see a session before committing.
Yes, participation is expected. Children learn music by watching the adults they trust most. Your voice quality is not the point. A caregiver singing off-key with full commitment gives a child far more than one who sits quietly. Think of your engagement as fuel: the more present you are, the faster the child’s musical sense develops.
Birth through age five, with a caregiver at every class. Siblings within that range can attend together. After five, children are ready for private lessons. Rhythm Kids, which bridges ages four to seven, is available at select locations.
Christie Pits is about a 12-minute walk from the Conway Ave studio, and Dufferin Grove Park is roughly 10 minutes south on Dufferin. Wychwood Barns, two blocks north, has a farmers market on Saturdays. Many families schedule a class and walk to one of those spots afterward.
