What happens in a Music Together class

A typical 45-minute class moves through a range of musical experiences: a hello song to settle everyone in, rhythm instruments passed around the circle, movement activities where caregivers carry or follow their children, and quieter lullaby moments near the end. The atmosphere is informal. Toddlers wander. Babies stare. Older children start to imitate. All of that is exactly as it should be.

The same set of songs repeats across all 10 weeks of the season. That repetition is intentional and developmental. A child who hears a song for the second time begins to anticipate the melody. By the fifth or sixth hearing, they start to fill in words before they arrive. By the tenth, the song belongs to them. Drop-in classes break that accumulation, which is why Music Together runs in seasons rather than individual sessions.

Caregivers are the most important element in the room. When a parent sings alongside their child, it functions like fuel on a fire. When a caregiver sits back, checks their phone, or disengages, the child loses their reference point. Singing quality is irrelevant. Presence is everything.

Getting to the studio from Wychwood

Our studio is at 12 Conway Ave, Toronto M6E 1H2, near the corner of St. Clair Ave W and Wychwood Ave. Families from the Wychwood neighbourhood are typically a five-minute walk or a short bike ride away. The Wychwood Barns are less than a block south, and Christie Pits is a 10-minute walk east along St. Clair.

By transit, the 512 St. Clair streetcar runs along St. Clair Ave W and stops a short walk from Conway Ave. St. Clair West subway station (Line 1) is roughly 10 minutes west on the streetcar. Families coming from Dufferin Grove or Corso Italia can walk north on Dufferin to St. Clair and pick up the streetcar heading west, reaching the studio in under 15 minutes.

Street parking is available on Conway Ave and the surrounding residential streets. Weekday morning classes typically have easy parking; check posted signs for permit zones. The neighbourhood is flat and stroller-friendly, with wide sidewalks along St. Clair.

What children gain at each age

A six-month-old arrives without the ability to sing or clap, but their auditory system is already cataloguing rhythm, pitch, and tone colour. Consistent exposure across a 10-week season builds a musical vocabulary they will draw on for years. A three-year-old who has been in Music Together classes begins to match pitch, improvise rhythms, and sing independently at home. A five-year-old in their final season is ready for the next step.

After Music Together (ages 0 to 5), children who are ready for a structured group experience can move into Rhythm Kids, available at select locations, which bridges the gap between early childhood music classes and private instruction. From there, private lessons in piano, guitar, singing, and other instruments are available for children aged five and up at our studio at 12 Conway Ave.

Families from Corso Italia, Dufferin Grove, and Christie Pits are all within easy reach via the 512 St. Clair streetcar or a 5 to 10-minute walk. Independent teachers vary widely in training and continuity. At ABC Academy, every Music Together class is led by a teacher who holds a university music degree or equivalent conservatory credential, and has completed the formal Music Together teacher training. We have multiple credentialed teachers, so if your regular teacher is unavailable, we can match your family with another qualified instructor. We have two Toronto locations, giving families more scheduling options. For children who want to continue into private lessons, our teachers offer RCM exam preparation, though recreational learners are equally welcome and make up the majority of our students. The through-line from a first Music Together class at 18 months to a Grade 4 RCM exam at age 11 can happen within the same school, with teachers who know your child.
Drop-in classes change their content week to week. Music Together uses a fixed song collection across a 10-week season precisely because children need to hear the same songs many times before they can internalize them. A toddler hearing a song for the first time mostly observes. By the fourth or fifth hearing, they begin to anticipate. By the eighth or ninth, they fill in words before they arrive. Drop-in formats cannot produce that accumulation. If you want to experience a class before committing to a season, we offer a free demo class with no obligation.
Yes, participation is expected, but skill is not. Caregivers sing, clap, move, and follow along with their child. Children learn music by watching the adults closest to them, and an engaged caregiver is like fuel to a fire. A caregiver who sits back or stays silent reduces the experience for their child. You do not need to be musical. You do not need to carry a tune. You need to try.
Music Together classes are designed for children from birth to age five, with a caregiver attending every session. Siblings within that age range can attend the same class together, which often works well for families with a two-year-old and a four-year-old. At ages four to seven, children who are ready for a more structured experience can join Rhythm Kids classes, available at select locations. From age five, children are ready for private lessons in piano, guitar, singing, and other instruments at our Wychwood studio.
Our studio at 12 Conway Ave is less than a block from the Wychwood Barns, and many of our families come from the same neighbourhood that uses the Barns for farmers markets, art events, and community programming. We are a separate, privately run music school, but we are very much part of the same Wychwood community. Families who walk past the Barns on their way to Christie Pits typically find us easy to reach on foot or by stroller.
