How Private Lesson Pricing Works
At ABC Academy, private lessons come in two lengths: 30 minutes and 45 minutes. The length of the lesson is the primary cost driver, not the student’s skill level or the instrument chosen. A beginner pianist and an advanced violinist both pay the same rate for a 30-minute lesson. The difference in learning progress comes from practice time at home, not from a price tier.

What You’re Actually Paying For
When you enroll your child in a private lesson, you’re paying for a trained teacher, a consistent weekly time slot, and a structured curriculum tailored to your child’s age and goals. Our private-lesson teachers hold university music degrees or the equivalent. Each lesson includes careful planning for what your child will learn that week, feedback on their practice, and adjustments to keep them motivated.
Make-up lessons are included. We offer up to 2 guaranteed make-up lessons per teaching year for student absences, and additional make-ups for teacher absences and weather closures. More details are on our policies page.
Private Lessons vs. Music Together® Group Classes
If your child is under five, Music Together group classes are the right starting point. Music Together is a 10-week seasonal group class for ages birth to five, with a parent or caregiver in the room. We offer a free demo class so you can see how it works. Music Together classes cost less than private lessons because instruction is shared across a small group of families.
Private lessons begin at age five. If your child is five or older and ready for one-on-one instruction, private lessons let you work with a dedicated teacher every week on your child’s specific instrument and learning pace.
How Lesson Length Affects Cost
A 30-minute lesson is ideal for students aged five to seven, or for anyone just starting their instrument. You get focused time on fundamentals and new material, then the student practices at home. A 45-minute lesson adds more playing time and deeper work on technique. A 45-minute lesson is common for older students, those working toward exams, or students at intermediate or advanced levels.
The step up from 30 to 45 minutes is smaller than jumping to 45 minutes, so many families choose 45 as a middle ground once their child has been playing for a year or more.
Private Lessons by Instrument
We offer private lessons in piano, violin, cello, guitar, woodwinds, and brass. Piano and guitar typically attract the most price-sensitive shoppers because they’re common starter instruments. Strings and woodwinds are less common, but their cost per lesson is the same as piano. We have private-lesson teachers in Leaside and at our Lawrence Park studio.
