Piano lessons near Bedford Park and Glenview Senior PS

Think of learning piano the way kids learn to read. In Grade 1, nobody hands a child War and Peace. They start with three-letter words, then sentences, then short books. Piano works the same way: you build a small vocabulary of notes, then short phrases, then actual pieces you recognize. By the end of a school year, most of our beginners can play something they’re proud to perform at a family dinner.

Shelley Mayer, who holds a master’s in music from U of T and is also a qualified Ontario classroom teacher, runs the piano program at 2180 Bayview Ave. That dual background matters: she’s trained in how children actually absorb new information, not just how music theory is traditionally sequenced. Families near Glenview Senior PS find the studio easy to reach — it’s five minutes from York Mills Station and a straight shot south on Yonge from the Avenue & Wilson corridor.

Bedford Park families often schedule lessons on the same afternoon as activities at Bedford Park Playground, since the neighbourhood and the studio are both within a short drive along Yonge. We keep a waiting-list priority for siblings who want the same time slot.

Lessons run 30 minutes. Current rates are on our tuition page. Regular private lessons are $55.38 (30 min) or $64.81 (45 min); a trial lesson is $20. If a younger child in the family is between 0 and 5, they can join a Music Together class at the same studio while an older sibling has piano — we’re an official Music Together licensee, one of the few schools in Toronto that offers both programs under the same roof.

Piano gives students the clearest picture of how music is structured. What takes months to hear on other instruments is visible from the first lesson.

Frequently asked questions about piano lessons near Bedford Park

My child is in Grade 3 at Glenview Senior PS and has never touched a piano. Is it too late to start?
Grade 3 is a very common starting age. Children that age pick up note-reading quickly because their literacy skills are already solid. Most students who start at 8 or 9 are playing recognizable pieces within three to four months.
Can an adult with no music background start piano lessons?
Yes, and adults often progress faster than children in the first six months because they can practise more deliberately. Shelley Mayer teaches a number of adult beginners alongside her younger students. The rate is the same regardless of age.
Is the studio accessible from the York Mills Station area?
Yes. The studio at 2180 Bayview Ave is about five minutes by car from York Mills Station, heading south on Bayview. Street parking is available along Bayview, and there’s a lot behind the building.
Do you offer trial lessons before we commit to a term?
We offer an initial lesson at our standard rate so you and your child can meet the teacher and see the studio before making any ongoing commitment. There’s no registration fee.
