Here are your homework assignments for this week:
Practice the snare drum/bass drum exercises from the sheet that I gave you last week. Play them slowly and count to make sure that you’re staying in time. Also, see if you can add in the hi-hat playing eighth notes just like we worked on this week.
Have a listen to “Chameleon” by Herbie Hancock on Youtube. Practice the beat along with the recording if possible. See if you can match the sound of what you’re doing to what you hear on the recording. Listen also for all the variations of the main beat that the drummer uses in the song.
Practice the stick control exercises using the toms and the snare. Repeat each one several times in a row, then try playing it as a drum fill. Work on playing at different speeds and try to stay loose. Using more wrist and less arm will help at faster speeds.
Practice the new beat that we worked on this week from “Crying Lightening” by the Arctic Monkeys. If you are able to, try playing it along with the song (it’s on Youtube). Also, work on the exercise that I showed you where you keep time with your foot on the bass drum and then play continually faster rhythms on the snare drum.
