Getting to the studio from Wychwood

The studio is at 12 Conway Ave, Toronto M6E 1H2, a short walk from the St. Clair Ave W and Wychwood Ave intersection. From the heart of Wychwood, head west along St. Clair Ave W past Bathurst Street; Conway Ave is on the south side of St. Clair, just before Dufferin Street. On foot from Wychwood Barns it takes about eight minutes along St. Clair. By transit, the 512 St. Clair streetcar runs the full length of St. Clair Ave W and stops close to Conway Ave. Christie Pits and Dufferin Grove Park are both within a ten-minute walk of the studio, so families who arrive a few minutes early have somewhere easy to wait. Street parking is available on Conway Ave and the surrounding residential streets, making it a practical option for families driving from Wychwood or from the Davenport and Christie area.

What singing/vocal lessons cover

In the first six months, beginner singers focus on the fundamentals that make every style more secure: breath support, posture, and learning to find pitch reliably. Students practice matching pitch to a piano, sustaining notes without tension, and producing a clear tone in their comfortable range. These are not abstract exercises; teachers tie them to songs the student actually wants to sing, so the technical work feels purposeful from the start.

Children from age 5 develop listening skills, basic rhythm, and the confidence to sing in front of another person before the year is out. Teens work on repertoire that fits their changing voice, including pop, musical theatre, or classical depending on their interest, with attention to protecting the voice through the adolescent transition. Adults often come in wanting to improve pitch accuracy, increase their range, or prepare for a specific performance; lessons address whichever of those is most pressing. Both 30-minute and 45-minute lessons are available. Thirty minutes suits younger children and beginners who are still building concentration; 45 minutes gives older students and adults time to work through a piece from breath warm-up to polished delivery.

ABC Academy employs multiple credentialed singing teachers under one roof, which means we can match your child or yourself to the right teaching style rather than taking whoever is available. If the first match does not feel right, we will try another teacher without starting over from scratch. We offer two Toronto locations, a structured make-up lesson policy, and RCM exam preparation for students who want a formal track — but recreational learners are equally welcome and make up a large part of our enrolment. An independent teacher can be excellent, but continuity, backup coverage, and a proven 23-year track record are harder to find outside an established school.
Private singing lessons begin at age 5. At that age, lessons focus more on listening, matching pitch, and learning to use the voice gently than on formal technique. For children under 5, our Music Together® program is the right starting point: it runs in 10-week seasons with a caregiver present, emphasises singing and movement together, and includes a free demo class so families can try it before registering.
Yes. Several of our teachers have experience preparing students for Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) voice exams from the Preliminary level onward. That includes sight-reading, vocalise preparation, and the repertoire lists specific to each grade. Families pursuing RCM typically move to 45-minute lessons as the exam date approaches to allow enough time for technical exercises and piece work in the same session. If RCM is not your goal, that is equally fine — the same teachers work with students who simply want to enjoy singing without any exam component.
Music Together® at our St. Clair West studio is designed for children from birth through age 5 (and their caregivers). Each 10-week season includes a songbook and recording so families can continue singing at home between classes. The program is built around the idea that all children are musical by nature, and no prior experience is needed for the caregiver. A free demo class is available so you can see whether your child takes to it before committing to the season fee.
