Most teens who start lessons already know what they want to play. Our job is to get them there without six months of scales first.
Music Lessons for Teens in Toronto
ABC Academy of Music has taught teen students in Toronto since 2001. Private lessons run at 2180 Bayview Avenue (Lawrence Park) and 12 Conway Avenue (St. Clair West), or online. 30- and 45-minute slots are available — see current rates. Trial lessons start at $20. 4.8★ from 150 students on Google and Trustpilot.
Teenagers learn differently than younger kids — they want a reason, not just a routine. Every teacher at ABC has passed a Toronto Police Vulnerable Sector Check, and most are working musicians who teach the instrument they actually play, not a generalist curriculum.
Choose an Instrument
Guitar — acoustic or electric, classical technique or the songs your teen already listens to.
Piano — from complete beginner to RCM exam prep, at a pace that fits a busy school schedule.
Drums — rhythm fundamentals building toward playing along with real songs and, eventually, a band.
Singing — vocal technique for pop, musical theatre, or just building confidence performing.
What Lessons Actually Look Like
The first lesson is mostly about finding out what your teen already knows and what they want out of it — a specific song, an exam, a band audition, or just something to do that isn’t a screen. Teachers set concrete weekly goals rather than vague practice targets, and adjust pace based on how the school year is going.
Progress isn’t linear. The first two months are fundamentals; most teens hit a stride around month three. If a teen wants to quit at month two, that’s the most common — and worst — time to stop. A heads-up from a teacher about what’s normal usually makes the difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my teen start with zero experience?
Yes. Most teen students start from scratch. Lessons are paced to the student, not a fixed curriculum — a beginner teen is typically playing recognizable material within the first month.
How much do teen lessons cost in Toronto?
Trial lessons are $20. Regular lessons are $55.38 for 30 minutes or $64.81 for 45 minutes, at either Toronto studio or online. See full rates.
Which instrument should my teen start with?
Whichever one they’re actually asking for. Motivation matters more than any “easier first instrument” rule — a teen who wants to play guitar will progress faster on guitar than on an instrument they didn’t choose.
Do lessons work around a school schedule?
Yes. Weekday evening and weekend slots are both available at both studios, and lessons can shift with exam periods or extracurricular schedules — just talk to your teacher.
Can a teen work toward an RCM exam?
Yes, for piano, voice, violin, and guitar. See RCM exam prep for how that’s structured.
What if my teen wants to switch instruments later?
That happens often and isn’t a problem — talk to your teacher or contact us and we’ll help find the right fit.
