What happens in a Music Together class

A typical 45-minute session moves through a carefully sequenced set: a hello song to open, free-movement activities where children scatter instruments across the floor, quieter rhythm work in a circle, a lullaby wind-down, and a goodbye song that mirrors the opening. The structure feels informal, but it is deliberate.

The same songs repeat across all 10 weeks of the season, and that repetition is the point. Young children learn music the way they learn language: through accumulated exposure. In the early weeks, a toddler may watch, seemingly passive. By week four or five, she anticipates the next phrase. By week eight, she fills it in. That progression cannot happen in a drop-in setting because each new song resets the clock. The season arc is the curriculum.

Caregivers attend every class, and their participation is not optional. Think of it this way: an engaged caregiver is fuel to the fire. A distracted one is water on it. Singing quality does not matter at all. What matters is that the adults closest to the child are visibly, wholeheartedly in the music. Children take all their cues from the people they trust most.

Getting here from Bracondale Hill

Bracondale Hill sits on the ridge above Davenport Road, just west of Bathurst Street, with Hillcrest Park on its southern edge and Wychwood Barns a short walk down the slope. Our studio at 12 Conway Ave is roughly six minutes by car: head west along Davenport to Dufferin, turn north on Dufferin, then west on St. Clair Ave W to Conway Ave. Street parking is available on Conway Ave and on surrounding residential streets without a permit requirement during class hours.

By transit, take the 512 St. Clair streetcar westbound from St. Clair station to the Wychwood Ave stop, then walk one block south on Wychwood to Conway. Total travel time from the Bathurst end of Bracondale Hill is about 12 to 15 minutes. The Wychwood Barns farmers market draws many Bracondale Hill families to this part of the neighbourhood already, so the route tends to feel familiar.

The studio sits close to Corso Italia, Christie Pits, and Dufferin Grove Park. Families who combine the class with a stop at Christie Pits in warmer months will find the timing works well with a 9:30 or 10:30 start.

What your child gets at each age

A six-month-old absorbs sound, motion, and the sight of a caregiver genuinely engaged. There is no pressure to perform or respond; the immersion itself is the work.

A three-year-old begins to match pitch, reproduce rhythms with instruments, and anticipate song structures. The social dimension becomes real: she notices the other children and starts to mirror them.

A five-year-old who has spent two or three seasons in Music Together often has a head start that private lesson teachers notice immediately: steady internal pulse, comfort with group music, and ears that have already sorted out tonal patterns. From age five, children can move into private lessons at our Conway Ave studio. At select locations, Rhythm Kids (ages four to seven) offers a bridge program that adds more structured skill work while keeping the group format.

Drop-in classes are sociable, but they work against the way young children actually learn music. Toddlers build musical intuition through repetition: hearing the same songs 8 to 10 times across a season allows them to move from passive listening to anticipation to active participation. Each new song in a drop-in setting resets that process. Our 10-week seasons are designed to let that accumulation happen. If you want to experience the format before committing to a season, we offer a free demo class, no obligation.
Yes, and the quality of your voice is irrelevant. Children learn music from watching the people they trust most. An engaged caregiver, singing off-key and moving freely, is fuel to the fire. A caregiver sitting at the side scrolling a phone is water on it. The program works through your participation, not around it. Nobody in the room is auditioning; everyone is just showing up.
Birth to age five, with a caregiver. Mixed-age classes are common and often work well: an 18-month-old and a four-year-old sibling can attend the same session together. From age four to seven, Rhythm Kids is available at select locations as a bridge program with more structured musicianship work. From age five, children are ready for private lessons in piano, guitar, singing, or other instruments at our studio.
Our Conway Ave studio is a five-minute walk from Wychwood Barns and about ten minutes on foot from Christie Pits. Many families from Bracondale Hill already come to this pocket of the neighbourhood for the farmers market.
