What happens in a Music Together class

A typical 45-minute session moves through hello songs, rhythm instruments, free movement, quiet lullabies, and goodbye rituals. The sequence mirrors how a young child’s attention and energy move through the day: alert and social, then physical, then calm.

The same songs appear in every class across the full 10-week season. That repetition is the engine. At week one, a two-year-old watches. By week four, she claps on the beat. By week eight, she fills in the last word before you finish the phrase. That process, called audiation, is how musical understanding is built: through hundreds of encounters with the same material, not a single visit. A drop-in model breaks that accumulation. It is why Music Together runs in seasons, and why we offer a free demo class as a low-commitment entry point.

Caregivers attend every class, and what you do in the room matters. An engaged caregiver is fuel to the fire. A caregiver on a phone is water on it. Singing quality is irrelevant. Presence is not. Your child is watching you, not the teacher.

What children take from Music Together at different ages

A six-month-old absorbs pulse and pitch without yet producing them. A three-year-old moves on the beat, experiments with the instruments, and recognizes songs at home. A five-year-old fills in lyrics and anticipates phrase endings. Each stage builds on the last.

After Music Together (birth to age five), Rhythm Kids is available at select locations as a bridge for ages four to seven. Children ready for individual instruction can begin private lessons in piano, guitar, voice, or other instruments from our St. Clair West / Wychwood studio. Drop-in classes are convenient, but the developmental value of Music Together comes from repetition across a season. Children learn music the way they learn language: by hearing the same material dozens of times before they produce it themselves. A toddler in week one watches. By week eight, she is filling in words and anticipating phrases. That process, audiation, cannot happen in a single visit. We offer a free demo class as a low-commitment way to experience a session before enrolling in a full season.
Participation is expected, but performance is not. You do not need to hold a tune or know the songs. What matters is being present and engaged: singing along as you can, making eye contact, clapping, moving. An engaged caregiver is fuel to your child’s musical fire. A caregiver on a phone is water on it. Your child is watching you, not the teacher.
Birth to age five, with a caregiver present. Siblings in that age range can attend the same class. After age five, Rhythm Kids is available at select locations as a bridge for ages four to seven. Private lessons begin from age five onward.
Yes. The studio at 12 Conway Ave is about a five-minute walk from Wychwood Barns along Wychwood Ave heading south. Families who spend time at the Barns, Dufferin Grove Park, or Christie Pits are already in the right neighbourhood. The studio is easy to reach on foot with a stroller, and the area has reliable street parking on Conway Ave and surrounding streets.
ABC Academy has multiple credentialed Music Together teachers, so if your regular teacher is unavailable we match you with another rather than cancelling. We have two Toronto studio locations. Recreational learners and RCM exam-track students are equally welcome. An independent teacher may offer more personal continuity, but cannot match the same scheduling depth or range of pathways.
