What happens in a Music Together class
A typical 45-minute session follows a consistent arc: a hello song that names each child by name, rhythm instruments passed around the circle, movement activities where caregivers sway or gently lift with their child, quieter lullaby stretches, and a goodbye song that closes every class the same way. The repetition is not incidental; it is the curriculum. Toddlers build musical intuition by hearing the same songs eight to ten times across a season. By week four or five, most children begin to anticipate the next phrase before it arrives. By week eight, many fill in the melodic gap themselves, often before the teacher does.
Caregivers attend every class as active participants, not observers. An engaged caregiver who sings along and makes eye contact during a lullaby is fuel to the fire of a child’s musical attention. A caregiver who sits back and checks a phone is water on that fire. Your voice does not need to be good. It needs to be present.
Getting to the St. Clair West studio from the neighbourhood
The studio at 12 Conway Ave sits in the heart of St. Clair West, one block south of Wychwood Barns and a few minutes’ walk from the St. Clair Ave W and Wychwood Ave intersection. Families along St. Clair Ave W, on Wychwood Ave, or anywhere between Dufferin and Bathurst are within a short walk or a single bus ride. The 512 St. Clair streetcar runs the length of St. Clair Ave W and stops near Wychwood Ave, a two-minute walk from the studio. Saturday morning service is consistent and runs directly through the neighbourhood.
Street parking is available on Conway Ave itself; Saturday mornings fill up early, so Wychwood Ave and Helena Ave are reliable backups one block in either direction. The studio entrance is stroller-accessible from street level. Wychwood Barns is one block north, and the farmers market there runs year-round on Saturday mornings, making it easy to combine a class with a market visit. Christie Pits Park is a ten-minute walk south, and Dufferin Grove Park is a short drive or streetcar ride west along St. Clair.
What children gain at each stage
A six-month-old absorbs pitch and rhythm through passive listening and the physical sensation of being rocked or bounced to a beat. By age two or three, children begin to vocalize, echo phrases, and match claps to the beat. A five-year-old in a mixed-age class often takes on an older-sibling role, modeling for younger children and beginning to internalize concepts like tempo and dynamics that will carry into private lessons.
For children aged four to seven, Rhythm Kids offers a bridge experience at select locations, connecting group music play with more structured listening and rhythm skills. From age five onward, children are ready for private lessons in piano, guitar, singing, or other instruments at our Conway Ave studio. Children who build rhythmic and tonal foundations in Music Together tend to settle into private lessons more quickly than those starting cold.
