What happens in a Music Together class
A typical 45-minute Music Together class moves through a sequence your child will begin to anticipate: a hello song, free movement with scarves or ribbon sticks, rhythm instruments passed around the circle, slower lullaby time, and a goodbye song. The structure is intentional. The same songs repeat across all 10 weeks of the season, and that repetition is the curriculum. When a two-year-old hears a song for the fifth or sixth time, something shifts: they stop being a passive listener and start filling in the melody before it arrives. That anticipation is how musical intuition builds. A drop-in breaks that accumulation.
Caregivers attend every class, and their participation is the engine. Think of an engaged caregiver as fuel to the fire: a child watching a parent sing and move freely catches that energy and follows. A distracted caregiver has the opposite effect. Singing quality does not matter. What matters is presence. Some of our most musically engaged children come from families where neither parent considers themselves musical at all.
Getting to the studio from Regal Heights
Regal Heights sits at the southern edge of the Stockyards neighbourhood, roughly bounded by St. Clair Ave W to the south, Caledonia Rd to the west, and Dufferin St to the east. The Conway Ave studio is a seven-to-ten minute walk from most of Regal Heights. From Dufferin St and St. Clair Ave W, walk or drive west along St. Clair Ave W to Wychwood Ave, then north one block to Conway Ave. If you use the 512 St. Clair streetcar, ride it west from Dufferin Station and get off at Wychwood Ave.
Wychwood Barns is less than a five-minute walk from the studio, and Christie Pits and Dufferin Grove Park are both reachable on foot. Families who visit the Wychwood Farmers Market on Saturday mornings will recognize the same block. Street parking is available on Conway Ave and the surrounding residential streets throughout the week. With a stroller, the flat stretch of St. Clair Ave W is the easiest route.
What children at different ages get from Music Together
A six-month-old does not sing or clap, but their brain is absorbing the tonal and rhythmic patterns in the room. By 18 months, most children are babbling along to familiar melodies in what Music Together calls music babble — the musical equivalent of language babble. A three-year-old begins to match pitch and fill in endings of familiar phrases. A five-year-old is ready to start being intentional about rhythm and melody, which is also when private lessons become appropriate.
The age pathway: Music Together runs from birth to age five, with a caregiver. Rhythm Kids, available at select locations, bridges ages four to seven in a more structured group setting. From age five onward, children can move into private lessons in piano, singing, guitar, or another instrument at our Conway Ave studio or our Lawrence Park location.
