What happens in a Music Together class

Children learn music the same way they learn language: by hearing it, moving to it, and experimenting with it long before they can explain what they’re doing. A typical 45-minute Music Together session moves through hello songs, rhythm instrument exploration, movement games, and quiet lullabies. The pacing is designed for young children, so there is no pressure to perform and no expectation that anyone sits still.

The same songs come back every week across the season, and this is deliberate. A toddler who hears a song for the first time simply takes it in. By the fourth encounter, they begin to anticipate the chorus. By the eighth or ninth time, they start filling in the words or the rhythm. That self-directed participation is the developmental goal. A drop-in model interrupts this accumulation; the 10-week season is the structure that makes it work.

Caregivers attend every class, and their participation matters more than most families expect. Think of it as fuel to a fire: your willingness to engage, not your vocal ability, is what powers your child’s response. If you sing, your child understands that music is something adults care about. Singing quality is irrelevant. Presence is everything.

What your child gets from Music Together at each age

A six-month-old absorbs music through passive listening and physical sensation. A three-year-old begins moving with the beat and experimenting with instruments. A five-year-old starts to predict melodic phrases and fill them in, an early sign of tonal and rhythmic competence. Music Together serves the full range from birth to five; siblings in that range can attend the same class together.

After Music Together, children ready at around age five can move into private piano, guitar, or singing lessons at our Lawrence Park studio. Rhythm Kids offers a group-music bridge at select locations for children around four to seven.

Drop-in classes give a child one encounter with a song. Music Together gives them eight to ten encounters across a season, and that accumulation is the point. Toddlers build musical intuition by hearing the same material repeatedly until they can anticipate it, then fill it in themselves. That self-directed moment cannot be produced by a single session. We offer a free demo class so you can see the format before committing.
