By TTC, take the 512 St. Clair streetcar westbound from St. Clair Station, ride about six stops, and walk one block south to Conway. What guitar lessons cover

In the first six months, a beginning guitarist learns how to sit and hold the instrument correctly, how to position the fretting and picking hands, and how to produce a clean tone on each string. Early sessions cover open chords, simple single-note melodies, and basic music reading or tab, depending on age and goal. A properly sized instrument with comfortable string action makes a real difference at this stage: a student who finds the guitar physically easy to hold is far more likely to practise between lessons.

Children aged 5 to 8 typically start with a 30-minute lesson, focusing on one or two skills per session and learning short songs they recognise. From around age 9, or when attention and hand size allow, a 45-minute lesson gives room to build technique and repertoire side by side. Teens and adults often begin with 45 minutes and move through material faster, particularly if they have a specific style in mind, whether that is pop, classical, folk, or blues. Throughout all ages, teachers adjust repertoire to keep the student engaged, since most students who leave guitar do so because the lessons felt disconnected from music they actually cared about.

ABC Academy keeps a team of credentialed teachers, each holding a university music degree or equivalent conservatory training, so if your child does not connect with the first match we can find another without you having to start your search over. Our guaranteed teacher-match policy means you are not locked in to a single person. We have two Toronto locations, teach students from age 5 through adults, and offer RCM exam preparation alongside purely recreational lessons: neither path is treated as secondary. Independent teachers offer real value, but a single teacher cannot always cover every style, age group, or scheduling gap the way a small school can.
The first lesson covers posture, how to hold the pick or fingers, the name and sound of each string, and how to produce a clear tone. By the third or fourth session most students are playing short melodies or their first chord. Teachers usually introduce a recognisable song early, before boredom sets in, because a student who hears themselves play something familiar wants to keep going. You do not need to know anything about guitar before the trial lesson.
Private guitar lessons at ABC Academy begin at age 5. Younger children sometimes benefit from a general music programme first: our Music Together® classes run from birth through age 8 and build the rhythmic and listening foundation that makes instrument lessons easier later. For children in the Annex area, the Music Together programme at our Conway Ave studio is worth considering before or alongside early guitar.
Yes. Our teachers are familiar with the Royal Conservatory of Music guitar syllabus and can guide students from Preliminary through the higher grades. Recreational learners who have no interest in exams are equally welcome, and most of our students fall into that category. If you want to understand how RCM preparation works, our RCM exams parent guide explains the process without assuming prior knowledge.
A student instrument is not required for the trial lesson, but we recommend having one at home by the second or third session, since most learning happens through daily practice between lessons. Our teachers can advise on appropriate size for the student’s age and suggest where to find a reliable starter guitar at a reasonable price. Instrument setup, including string action and tuning stability, matters more than most families expect at the beginner stage.
