Getting here from the Annex
From the Annex, the studio at 12 Conway Ave sits roughly 20 minutes by car on a weekday afternoon. Most families head west on Bloor Street, continue through Seaton Village and past Christie Pits, then travel northwest along Davenport Road or cut north on Dufferin Street to St. Clair Ave W. Conway Ave is a short residential street just off St. Clair, walkable from Wychwood Barns. By TTC, take the 512 St. Clair streetcar westbound from St. Clair Station, ride about six stops, and walk one block south to Conway. The studio is also accessible from Christie Pits and Dufferin Grove Park, both within a short drive or bike ride. Street parking is available on Conway Ave and surrounding streets.
What guitar lessons cover
In the first six months, a beginning guitarist learns how to sit and hold the instrument correctly, how to position the fretting and picking hands, and how to produce a clean tone on each string. Early sessions cover open chords, simple single-note melodies, and basic music reading or tab, depending on age and goal. A properly sized instrument with comfortable string action makes a real difference at this stage: a student who finds the guitar physically easy to hold is far more likely to practise between lessons.
Children aged 5 to 8 typically start with a 30-minute lesson, focusing on one or two skills per session and learning short songs they recognise. From around age 9, or when attention and hand size allow, a 45-minute lesson gives room to build technique and repertoire side by side. Teens and adults often begin with 45 minutes and move through material faster, particularly if they have a specific style in mind, whether that is pop, classical, folk, or blues. Throughout all ages, teachers adjust repertoire to keep the student engaged, since most students who leave guitar do so because the lessons felt disconnected from music they actually cared about.
