Guitar lessons for Corso Italia families

Getting here from Corso Italia

Corso Italia runs along St. Clair Ave W between Dufferin and Lansdowne, and our Conway studio sits a few minutes east along the same corridor. The anchor intersection is St. Clair Ave W and Wychwood Ave. From St. Clair and Dufferin, the drive east to Conway Ave takes about five to eight minutes. Wychwood Barns is one block from our studio. Christie Pits and Dufferin Grove Park are both within a short drive. Families who use transit take the 512 St. Clair streetcar east from Dufferin Station and exit near Wychwood Ave, a short walk south to Conway Ave. Street parking is available on Conway Ave and the surrounding streets. Most Corso Italia families find the trip easy to build into a weekly routine.

What your child learns in guitar lessons

In the first six months of lessons, a beginner guitarist learns how to hold the guitar correctly, how to press strings cleanly at the fret, how to pick and strum with the right hand, and how to move between simple open chord shapes. Posture and hand position come first because habits formed early last the longest. A good teacher will correct tension in the fretting hand before it becomes a problem, and will build a student’s ear alongside their fingers so they can hear when something is off.

Children age 5 through 8 typically start with 30-minute lessons, which is the right length for their attention. From age 9 up, and for most teens and adults, 45-minute lessons let the teacher cover technique, theory, and repertoire without feeling rushed. If you are not sure which length to start with, your teacher will recommend based on your child’s age and focus. Teens often come in wanting to learn songs they already love; that’s a fine starting point. Adults returning to guitar after years away are also welcome, and that approach differs from teaching a complete beginner. Electric guitar is as valid a starting point as acoustic; some younger students find the thinner neck easier to press.

Our closest studio for Corso Italia families is 12 Conway Ave, Toronto M6E 1H2, one block south of St. Clair Ave W near Wychwood Ave. From St. Clair and Dufferin, it is about five to eight minutes east along St. Clair by car or streetcar (512 St. Clair, eastbound, exit near Wychwood Ave). Our second studio for private lessons is 2180 Bayview Ave, Toronto M4N 3K7 in Lawrence Park, about 20 minutes from Corso Italia by car. Most families from this neighbourhood use Conway as their regular location.

An independent teacher is one person; we are a school with multiple credentialed teachers, which means your child is not left without a lesson if their teacher is sick or leaves. We have a guaranteed teacher-match policy: if the first teacher is not the right fit for your child’s age, learning style, or musical interests, we find another match rather than leave the situation to get worse. We teach at two Toronto locations (Conway and Lawrence Park) so scheduling is more flexible. RCM exam preparation is available for students who want it, including RCM Preliminary and higher grades; but recreational learners and students with no interest in exams are equally welcome and make up the majority of our students.

It does not matter much. A private guitar teacher at ABC Academy is prepared to work on acoustic, electric, or classical guitar depending on the student’s interest. Electric can feel slightly more approachable for some younger students because of the thinner neck and lighter string tension, but both instruments teach the same fundamentals. If your child has a strong preference, follow it. We can adjust the repertoire accordingly.

We offer guitar rentals for students beginning private lessons, including child-sized instruments. Rentals come set up and ready to play. We recommend talking to your teacher before purchasing an instrument on your own, because the right size depends on your child’s height and hand size and the wrong size makes everything harder. Your teacher can advise on what to look for and what to avoid at the beginner price range.

It happens often, and it is rarely about the instrument. Most of the time it comes down to a teacher who was not the right match, material that felt too hard or too easy, or a practice routine that was not realistic for the family. We will ask what did not work the first time and make a different match before your child starts again. A fresh start with the right teacher often changes the outcome.
