ABC Academy of Music offers private singing and vocal lessons in Hillcrest, Toronto, taught from our St. Clair West / Wychwood studio at 12 Conway Ave, Toronto M6E 1H2, near Corso Italia and west of Dufferin. We have offered singing and vocal instruction in Toronto since 2003. Regular private lessons are $55.38 for 30 minutes or $64.81 for 45 minutes; a trial lesson is $20. Our vocal teachers hold university music degrees or equivalent conservatory credentials. Private singing begins at age 5 and continues through teen and adult levels. Voice is one of the few instruments where the instrument itself is the student’s body, which means every lesson plan is tailored to the individual rather than adapted from a generic method. Getting here from Hillcrest

Hillcrest sits at St. Clair and Christie, a short distance east of our studio on Conway Ave. Take the 512 St. Clair streetcar westbound from Christie Station to Wychwood Ave, then walk under three minutes south to 12 Conway Ave. Door-to-door transit time is roughly 10 to 12 minutes. By car, the route is a straight run west along St. Clair Ave W, with street parking available on Conway Ave and surrounding streets. Families coming from Hillcrest pass landmarks they likely know: Christie Pits, two blocks south of the streetcar line near Christie and Bloor, and Wychwood Barns at Wychwood Ave and St. Clair Ave W, a community arts and market space less than five minutes’ walk from our door. Dufferin Grove Park is a further 10-minute walk south along Dufferin Street. The neighbourhood around Conway Ave is walkable and quiet, which matters for weekly trips with younger children.

What singing lessons cover

Beginners in the first six months of vocal lessons work on breath support, posture, and placement before tackling repertoire in any serious way. A teacher who skips this foundation usually has to come back to it later. At ABC Academy, early lessons cover diaphragmatic breathing, how to release tension in the jaw and throat, and basic pitch accuracy work using scales and short melodic exercises. Students then move into repertoire suited to their current range and interests, which might be simple folk songs, musical theatre excerpts, or classical art songs, depending on the student’s age and what keeps them engaged.

Children age 5 and up begin with 30-minute lessons, which are appropriate for the attention span and vocal stamina at that age. Young voices are still developing and should not be pushed into extended technique work early on. Teens often move to 45-minute lessons once they are comfortable in the lesson setting and working on more demanding repertoire or RCM exam preparation. Adults who are returning to singing after a gap or starting for the first time typically prefer 45-minute sessions to make meaningful progress each week. If you are unsure which length to book, the trial lesson gives both teacher and student a practical sense of what fits. Teacher matching by age, vocal type, and musical interest is built into every enrolment; if the first match is not right, we find another teacher before the next scheduled lesson.

An independent teacher is one person; if that person is unavailable or not the right fit for your child, you start over. ABC Academy has multiple credentialed vocal teachers, each holding a university music degree or conservatory equivalent, which means we can match students by age, vocal type, and musical interest rather than whoever happens to have an opening. We operate a guaranteed teacher-match policy: if the first pairing does not work, we find another teacher before you are asked to leave. We teach at two Toronto locations, St. Clair West / Wychwood and Lawrence Park, giving families scheduling flexibility. RCM exam preparation is available for students who want it, but recreational learners make up a large part of our student body and receive exactly the same standard of instruction.
Private singing begins at age 5. At that age, lessons focus on pitch matching, breathing basics, and short songs rather than classical technique. Young voices are still maturing and should not be asked to sing outside a comfortable, easy range. By age 8 or 9, most students are ready for more structured work on tone, articulation, and simple repertoire lists from the RCM Preliminary or introductory level. Children under 5 are welcome in our Music Together® classes at our St. Clair West location, which are designed for children birth to age 5 with a caregiver and run in 10-week seasons.
School choir develops confidence and basic pitch awareness, both of which help in private lessons. The difference is that private lessons focus on the individual voice: posture specific to that student, breath patterns that suit that student’s body, and resonance adjustments that a choir setting cannot make one-on-one. Most choir singers find the early months of private lessons eye-opening, partly because they discover habits that worked well in a group but hold the voice back in solo work. That is not a setback; it is the point at which real progress begins.
Adult singers are a regular part of our student body at both locations. Adults who study with us range from complete beginners to experienced performers who want to refine specific aspects of their technique, such as breath control for longer phrases, chest-to-head register transitions, or preparation for auditions. Most adult students choose 45-minute lessons. Some work toward RCM examinations, but many simply want to sing songs they love more confidently, and our teachers build the lesson plan around that goal.
The school provides up to two guaranteed make-up lessons per teaching year for student absences when notice is given in advance. Make-up lessons are scheduled based on teacher availability within the same season. The policy does not cover last-minute cancellations, so flag scheduling conflicts as soon as they come up.
