Music Class for a 1-Year-Old in Toronto
Your one-year-old is curious, mobile, and starting to respond to music with movement and sound. A music class at this age isn’t about performance or instruction. It’s about rhythm, bonding, and early exposure to melody in a setting built for toddlers and their caregivers.
At ABC Academy, we offer Music Together® classes for families with babies and toddlers. This is the right choice for children under 5 in Toronto. Private lessons begin at age 5, so Music Together is where most families start.
Why Music Together for One-Year-Olds
Music Together is designed for children from birth through age 5, with a parent or caregiver in the room. The class is 45 minutes, held once per week, and runs in 10-week seasons. Your child moves, listens, and plays simple instruments alongside other families. You sing, drum, and dance together.
At one year old, your child is absorbing patterns and sounds without needing to “perform” anything. They see you engaged in music and learn that it’s a normal, joyful part of life.
What to Expect in Class
Music Together classes include singing, movement, drumming, and instrument play. Our classes are led by Trained Music Together teachers who know how to work with toddlers and their caregivers. The room is welcoming and designed so children feel comfortable exploring at their own pace.
You don’t need to have a musical background or be able to sing well. Your presence and participation matter more than your skill. Many parents find these classes as enjoyable as their children do.
When to Move to Private Lessons
Most children are ready for private lessons around age 5. Before that, Music Together provides the right foundation. If your child shows strong interest in an instrument when they get closer to age 5, let us know and we can discuss whether it’s the right time.
Music Together experience is an asset when your child does start private lessons. They’ve already been around music and rhythm in a group setting.

Questions Parents Ask
Does my one-year-old need to sit still or follow instructions?
No. One-year-olds are naturally moving and exploring. Music Together is designed around this. Your child can crawl, walk, climb on you, or sit quietly. There’s no “right” way to participate.
What if my child cries or gets upset during class?
This is normal. Some children take time to warm up to a group setting. Our teachers are used to this. You can step out and return, or sit at the edge of the room. Many children who cry in the first class are enthusiastically joining in by week three.
Can I bring a sibling?
Yes. Siblings are welcome in Music Together classes. If you have a newborn and a one-year-old, you can bring both. Let us know when you register so we can make sure you have the space you need.
Is one music class per week enough?
For most one-year-olds, one class per week is a good starting point. It exposes your child to structured music and group time without overwhelming your schedule. As your child grows, you can explore more frequent classes or add individual lessons.
