Learning music builds skills that transfer across everything else. The right teacher makes the difference between quitting in month two and playing for life.
Finding the Right Music Class for Your Child’s Age
Music lessons aren’t one-size-fits-all. The right program depends on your child’s age and readiness. We offer several pathways—each designed for a specific stage of development.
Music Together for Babies and Toddlers (Birth to Age 5)
Music Together is for children from birth through age 5, with a parent or caregiver. Classes meet weekly for 10 weeks per season, focusing on singing, movement, and listening together. Your child gets a free demo class to see if it’s a fit.
Music Together builds a foundation in rhythm and pitch while creating a bonding experience. There’s no performance pressure, no instruments to buy upfront, and no musical experience required—for you or your child.
Music Together® is a registered trademark of Music Together LLC. ABC Academy of Music is an authorized Music Together center.
Rhythm Kids for Ages 4 Through Grade 2
Rhythm Kids bridges Music Together and private lessons. This group program welcomes children starting at age 4 and runs through grade 2. Kids learn rhythm patterns, simple songs, and basic music literacy in a playful, group setting.
Rhythm Kids is ideal if your child enjoys music but isn’t quite ready for one-on-one private instruction, or if you want a lower-cost introduction to structured music learning before committing to weekly private lessons.
Private Lessons Begin at Age 5
Most children are developmentally ready for private piano, guitar, violin, or voice lessons at age 5. Some younger children show readiness earlier; some need to wait a bit longer. There’s no rush.
Private lessons typically run 30 or 45 minutes per week. Our private-lesson teachers hold university music degrees or the equivalent. Lessons take place at our Lawrence Park studio and our Conway studio.

Age 5-6: Transition Years
Children at this age are still developing focus and fine motor skills. A Music Together background is an asset—your child already knows songs and rhythms we use in the early lessons. Kids without that background catch up quickly.
We recommend starting with shorter lessons (30 minutes) and adjusting length as your child grows. Some families combine Rhythm Kids with a few private lessons to ease the transition.

Private lessons typically begin at age 5. Children under 5 benefit more from Music Together, where they learn alongside a parent or caregiver. This foundation makes the transition to private lessons smoother.
Does my child need musical experience to start?
No. Children of all backgrounds join Music Together, Rhythm Kids, and private lessons. Our teachers are trained to meet each child where they are.
What if I’m not sure whether my child is ready?
Come to a free Music Together demo or schedule a chat about your child’s readiness. We’ll recommend the right fit based on age and development.
What instruments are available for private lessons?
We offer piano, guitar, violin, and voice lessons for children age 5 and up. Bring a Yamaha P-45 weighted-key keyboard or acoustic guitar if you have one; we can discuss rentals and purchases.
