Learning music builds skills that transfer across everything else. The right teacher makes the difference between quitting in month two and playing for life.

Music Lessons for a 4-Year-Old in Toronto

At age 4, your child is ready for serious musical growth. But the right choice at this age isn’t private one-on-one lessons — it’s a program built specifically for young learners who thrive with a caregiver present.

Music Together® is the gold standard for children under 5. Your child learns rhythm, pitch, and musical expression in a class with other children and their caregivers. The classes run for 10 weeks at a time, and you’re welcome to visit a free demo class to see what your child experiences.

Why Music Together at Age 4

Four-year-olds are still developing the independence and focus that private lessons demand. In a Music Together class, your child learns in a social setting, which keeps them engaged. You’re in the class too, singing and playing instruments together. This shared experience builds your child’s confidence and gives you tools to continue at home.

Classes meet weekly and include singing, instrument play, and movement games. Your child hears high-quality recordings at home during the week to reinforce what they learned. This combination of weekly classes and home listening creates momentum that solo private lessons can’t match at this age.

The Path from Music Together to Private Lessons

Music Together runs from birth through age 5. Many families continue with us through age 5 and then transition to private lessons at age 6 or later, once their child is ready for focused, independent work. Some families also explore our Rhythm Kids program, which starts at age 4 and runs through grade 2.

Private lessons begin at age 5. At that age, children have the attention span and hand coordination to benefit from focused, one-on-one instruction. Music Together at age 4 builds the listening skills and foundation they need.

What to Expect in a Music Together Class

Each class lasts about 45 minutes. Your child will explore rhythm instruments, hear singing and recorded music, and move to songs. You’ll sing along — don’t worry about your voice or musical experience. Classes are designed so that caregivers with no musical training feel comfortable participating.

You’ll receive a CD and access to online recordings for home listening. This daily, brief exposure reinforces the class experience and builds your child’s ear for music. Many families report that songs get stuck in their heads at home, which is exactly what’s supposed to happen.

When to Start Private Lessons

Private lessons typically begin at age 5. At that age, children can sit through a 30-minute lesson, follow multi-step instructions, and practice at home with some guidance. If your child has taken Music Together for a year or two, they’ll have a head start in musicality and ear training when private lessons begin.

Our private-lesson teachers hold university music degrees or the equivalent. Lessons run at our Lawrence Park studio and our Conway studio in 30-minute or 45-minute lengths. Current rates are on our tuition page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my 4-year-old too young to start music lessons?

Not at all. Age 4 is perfect for starting music education. Private one-on-one lessons aren’t usually the right fit until age 5, but Music Together is designed for this exact stage. Your child gets musical training, you participate, and you both enjoy it.

Can my 4-year-old start piano instead of Music Together?

Private piano lessons start at age 5 at the earliest. Most 4-year-olds don’t have the sustained attention or hand strength for regular piano practice. Music Together builds the listening skills and musical interest that make private lessons successful later.

What’s the difference between Music Together and private lessons?

Music Together is a group class where you participate with your child. Private lessons are one-on-one instruction focused on a specific instrument or skill. Both are valuable — we just recommend Music Together first because it suits your child’s age and development.

How do I know if my child is ready for private lessons at age 5?

Watch for sustained interest in music, willingness to practice at home, and the ability to focus on one activity for 20–30 minutes. Kids who’ve taken Music Together usually show these signs around age 5 or 6. We can chat about your child’s readiness when you contact us.
