Music Class for a 3-Year-Old in Toronto
Three-year-olds are ready for music, but not in the way you might imagine. They’re not ready for private lessons yet. What they need is a space where music and movement go together, where a parent or caregiver stays close by, and where the focus is play, not performance.
That’s what Music Together® is designed for. It’s the right fit for children from birth through age 5.
Why Music Together, Not Private Lessons Yet
At three, your child’s attention span is short. Their hands are still figuring out how the world works. What they’re ready for is listening, moving, singing alongside you.
Music Together classes meet once a week for 45 minutes. Your child learns songs and rhythms. You learn too. You bring the music home—the class materials include recordings, songbooks, and movement ideas for the rest of the week.
Private lessons start at age 5. Until then, Music Together gives your child a foundation in melody, rhythm, and listening that makes private lessons so much easier later on.
What Happens in a Music Together Class
Classes are small—usually six to eight children and their caregivers together. Our classes are led by Trained Music Together teachers.
You’ll see singing, rhythm games, some simple instruments (shakers, drums, bells), and movement. Your three-year-old might sing along or mostly watch. Both are fine. Children learn by watching and listening, not just by participating.
The same songs repeat across each 10-week season. Repetition helps young children absorb music and feel confident.
When to Start and How to Try It
Your three-year-old can join a Music Together class right now. Classes run in 10-week seasons throughout the year.

Moving to Private Lessons Later
At five years old, your child might be ready to switch to private lessons. By then, they’ll have been listening and singing in Music Together for two years. That foundation matters.
Private piano, guitar, voice, and other instruments are available at our Lawrence Park studio and our Conway studio. Our private-lesson teachers hold university music degrees or the equivalent.

The Path Forward
Music Together (birth through 5) is where your child starts. Rhythm Kids, our program for ages 4 through grade 2, can begin while your child is still in Music Together—they run at different times and complement each other.
Private lessons begin at 5. By then, your child will have a year or two of Music Together behind them, and they’ll be ready to sit with an instrument and focus.
