Getting from Forest Hill to Lawrence Park

Forest Hill sits between Spadina Road and Bathurst Street, from St. Clair Ave W north toward Eglinton. The most direct route to our studio is east along Eglinton Ave W to Bayview Ave, through the Bayview & Eglinton intersection, then north along Bayview four minutes to the studio at Yonge & Lawrence. Driving from Forest Hill Village takes about fifteen to eighteen minutes on a weekday afternoon. By TTC, take the 32 Eglinton bus east to Bayview Station, then connect north; allow thirty to thirty-five minutes door to door. The studio has a small parking lot behind the building, a paid lot across Bayview, and metered street parking nearby. Sunnybrook Park and Lawrence Park Ravine are both close, so families often combine the trip with time outdoors.

What guitar lessons cover, month by month

In the first six months, a new student builds the physical habits that make the guitar feel manageable: left-hand fretting position, right-hand picking and strumming, reading chord diagrams, and shifting between open chords cleanly. Most students learn three or four songs they actually want to play during this period, which keeps motivation intact through the early awkward stage.

Gergely Szabo, who holds an M.Mus in classical guitar from the University of Toronto, teaches at the Lawrence Park studio, along with Luciano Espin, a guitarist and producer experienced in contemporary styles, and Simon Van Heyst, who covers guitar and bass. A nine-year-old learning pop chords and a teenager working through music theory can both be matched to the right teacher.

Children aged 5 to 8 typically start with 30-minute lessons, which suits their attention span without fatigue. Students aged 9 and up, and most adults, move to 45 minutes as their practice routine matures. Your teacher will recommend the right length at the trial lesson. Adult learners are equally welcome and often progress quickly because practice sessions can be more focused.

With an independent teacher, your lessons depend on one person’s schedule, availability, and style. At ABC Academy, there are three guitar teachers at Lawrence Park alone, all with university training or equivalent credentials, all cleared through a Toronto Police Vulnerable Sector Check. If your first teacher isn’t the right fit for your child’s age or learning style, we move you to another without starting over. We have two Toronto private-lesson studios (Lawrence Park and St. Clair West), offer RCM exam preparation for students who want it, and welcome recreational learners equally. The school has operated since 2003, which means consistent policies, a known community presence, and teachers who aren’t freelancing between gigs.
Private guitar lessons begin at age 5. At that age, we use short songs, games, and a patient pacing that matches what young hands can actually do. Before age 5, Music Together® classes at our Lawrence Park or other locations offer a caregiver-and-child music experience that builds listening and rhythm well before instrument study begins. See our Music Together page for session dates.
Most children who practise three to four times a week for fifteen minutes are playing recognizable songs within two to three months. Adults often move faster because practice sessions tend to be more focused. The honest answer depends on the student’s goals and how consistent practice is at home. Your teacher will calibrate the pace at the first lesson and adjust from there.
Not before the trial lesson. Your teacher will discuss options at the first session based on the style of music your child or you want to play, hand size, and budget. For most beginners, an inexpensive acoustic or steel-string guitar covers the first year comfortably. Your teacher can point you toward reputable options and tell you what to avoid at the lower price points.
The school offers up to two guaranteed make-up lessons per teaching year for student absences, plus additional make-ups for teacher absences and weather closures. Consistency matters more than perfection; missing the occasional lesson doesn’t derail progress as long as at-home practice stays steady. Contact us directly for scheduling questions.
