What happens in a Music Together class

A typical 45-minute session moves through a sequence that feels loose but is carefully structured. Children and caregivers begin with a hello song that the whole group comes to know by name over the season. From there, a class might move through echo patterns on small percussion instruments, a flowing scarves movement activity, a simple folk melody repeated in two or three keys, and a quieter lullaby section toward the end. Nothing is performed; everything is explored together.

The curriculum repeats the same song collection across all 10 weeks of the season. This repetition is deliberate. Young children build musical intuition by hearing the same songs eight to ten times in different contexts: at class, in the car, at bath time. By week four or five, most children begin to anticipate the next phrase and fill in words or rhythms before an adult does. That moment, when a child leans forward and joins in, is the developmental payoff that a single drop-in class cannot produce.

Caregivers attend every class, not as observers but as participants. Research behind Music Together is clear that an engaged caregiver is the primary fuel. When the adult in the room sings and moves with genuine attention, the child’s learning catches fire. When a caregiver scrolls a phone, it has the opposite effect. Singing quality is irrelevant; presence is everything.

Getting to our Brampton studio from Fletcher’s Creek

Fletcher’s Creek sits in northwest Brampton, roughly 11 minutes from the studio by car. The most direct route runs east along Bovaird Drive, which connects cleanly to the studio side of Brampton without highway access. Families from the Queen Street and McLaughlin Road corridor typically treat a morning class as a mid-week anchor: drop older siblings at school on Chinguacousy Road, drive east on Bovaird, attend class, and run errands at the Trinity Commons or Shoppers on the way back.

Brampton Transit route 54 (Bovaird) connects Fletcher’s Creek to central Brampton and provides reasonable access for families commuting by bus. Allow roughly 25 to 30 minutes by transit including walking time from the nearest stop to the studio entrance. Parking is available at the studio for those driving, with space directly adjacent to the entrance.

Families from neighbouring streets including Creditview Road, Sandalwood Parkway, and the Heartlake area share a similar travel window. The Brampton studio serves all of Peel Region and north Brampton.

What children get at different ages

A six-month-old in a Music Together class is absorbing tonal and rhythmic patterns through repetition and caregiver voice. There is no visible participation, but the auditory accumulation is real. By 18 months, most children are matching pitch fragments and beginning to synchronize their bodies with a beat. A three-year-old who has attended one or two full seasons will often lead a song during free time at home, recalling the entire melodic arc. At five, a child ready to transition into private lessons arrives already understanding what a phrase is, how rhythm organizes sound, and how to listen across a full piece of music.

The age pathway from here is: Music Together (birth to 5, caregiver and child), Rhythm Kids (ages 4 to 7, at select locations), and then private lessons in piano, guitar, voice, or another instrument starting at age five. We can help you identify the right next step when the time comes.

We serve Fletcher’s Creek families from our Brampton location. The studio is at 363 Howden Blvd, Brampton. By car from the Queen and McLaughlin area, the drive east along Bovaird Drive takes roughly 11 minutes. By Brampton Transit route 54, allow 25 to 30 minutes including the walk from the stop. An independent teacher may be authorized and excellent; the practical differences are elsewhere. At ABC Academy, a team of credentialed teachers covers the program, so your class continues uninterrupted if your regular teacher is ill or on leave. We offer a teacher-match policy so that if the initial fit is not right, we find you a better one without re-enrolment friction. Students who outgrow early childhood classes and move into private lessons stay within the same school, with teachers who already know their musical background. RCM exam preparation is available for students who eventually want it, but recreational learners are equally at home here and form the majority of our families.
Drop-in classes are convenient, but the developmental model behind Music Together depends on repetition across a full season. Children build musical intuition by hearing the same songs eight to ten times in different settings over ten weeks. They begin to anticipate phrases, fill in rhythms, and carry songs home. A single drop-in session can spark interest, but it cannot produce that accumulation. If you want to try before committing to a season, we offer a free demo class so you can see the format and decide with your child in the room.
Yes, caregivers are active participants in every class, not observers. Children at this age learn music almost entirely by watching the adults closest to them, so a caregiver who sings and moves with genuine attention is the most powerful learning tool in the room. Think of it this way: an engaged caregiver is fuel to the fire. A distracted one is water on it. Singing quality does not matter at all. Willingness to be present and try does.
The core program is for children from birth through age five, always with a caregiver. Mixed-age classes are the standard format, so a family with a 14-month-old and a four-year-old attends together. Rhythm Kids, a bridge program for ages four to seven, is available at select locations when your older child is ready to move toward structured musical play without caregiver accompaniment. Private instrument lessons typically start at age five.
Many Fletcher’s Creek families coordinate Music Together with school drop-off on Chinguacousy Road or Sandalwood Parkway. The Bovaird Drive route to our Brampton studio runs in the same direction, making it practical to fold class into the existing school-run routine on two mornings per week. We offer multiple time slots each season; reach out and we will help you find one that works alongside your school commitments.
