What happens in a Music Together class

A typical 45-minute session follows a familiar arc: a hello song that names each child, rhythm instruments passed around the circle, movement activities where caregivers sway or bounce their child to the beat, quieter lullaby stretches, and a goodbye song. Toddlers build musical intuition by hearing the same songs eight to ten times across the 10-week season. By week four or five, most children begin to anticipate the next phrase; by week eight, many fill in the melodic gap themselves, completing a phrase the teacher deliberately left open.

Caregivers attend every class as active participants. An engaged caregiver who sings along and makes eye contact during the lullaby is fuel to the fire of a child’s musical attention. A caregiver who sits back and checks a phone is water on that fire. Singing quality does not matter. Presence does.

Getting here from Heart Lake

Heart Lake sits in the northwest corner of Brampton, bordered by Bovaird Drive to the south and Heart Lake Road to the west. From the Heart Lake community, Bovaird Drive east to Highway 410 south, then east along Queen Street to the studio area, takes about 12 to 15 minutes by car. Brampton Transit Route 54 connects the neighbourhood with downtown Brampton, where transfers reach the studio area; total transit time with a stroller is typically 25 to 30 minutes. Parking is available at the studio, which makes the car trip practical for families with young children and everything that comes along with them.

What children gain at each stage

A six-month-old absorbs pitch and rhythm through passive listening and the sensation of being rocked to a beat. By age two or three, children begin to vocalize, echo phrases, and clap along. A five-year-old in a mixed-age class often takes on an informal older-sibling role, modeling for younger children and beginning to internalize concepts like tempo and dynamics without being directly taught.

After Music Together, children aged four to seven can move into Rhythm Kids, available at select locations. From age five onward, private lessons in piano, guitar, singing, or other instruments are available at our Brampton studio. Children who build tonal and rhythmic foundations in Music Together tend to settle into private lessons more naturally.

Musical intuition in early childhood is built through repetition: hearing the same songs eight to ten times across a season, until a child anticipates the next phrase and eventually fills it in. A drop-in breaks that accumulation, introducing new material before previous songs have settled. The 10-week season format is a feature of the program. We offer a free demo class so you can see what a session looks like before committing.
Caregivers are expected to participate: singing, clapping, swaying, and making eye contact during quieter moments. An engaged caregiver is fuel to the fire of a child’s musical attention; a caregiver who opts out is water on that fire. Your voice does not need to be good. It needs to be present.
Music Together is designed for children from birth through age five, always with a caregiver. Mixed-age classes allow siblings at different stages to attend together. After age five, Rhythm Kids offers a bridge experience at select locations, and private lessons in piano, guitar, singing, and other instruments are available from age five onward at our Brampton studio.
An independent teacher is often one person. ABC Academy has multiple credentialed Music Together teachers, a guaranteed teacher-match policy if your first fit is not right, and two Toronto-area locations. We have been an authorized center since 2003. If your child later moves into private lessons, whether for RCM prep or purely recreational playing, all of it is available within the same school. A free demo class is available before you commit to a season.
Most children who are cautious in new group settings settle in within two or three sessions. The class format is predictable, the hello song names each child individually, and there is no performance expectation. Children who hold back and observe in early sessions are still absorbing the music, and the engagement often surfaces later in the season, frequently at home between classes.
